Pink Barcino is a three-metre-high stone monolith commemorating the 200th anniversary of Passeig de Gràcia, Barcelona’s most elegant and exclusive boulevard. The statue, which stands at the intersection with Avinguda Diagonal, was created by Barcelona-born artist Lluís Lleo and is estimated to weigh eight tons.
Lleó designed the statue to pay homage to Barcelona’s Roman origins while celebrating the city’s vibrant present and looking to the future.
The artist’s use of the colour pink, which he describes as the colour that “everybody loves but doesn’t dare use”, was chosen to represent fashion, especially the now defunct Salón Rosa, a café bar which was a chic hangout for Barcelona’s fashionable elite during the 1940s and 50s.
The statue was inaugurated in June 2024 and is scheduled to be relocated in January 2025, although the artist has stated that he hopes it can remain in its current location.
